Low Emission Vehicle Propulsion (H3051)
15 credits, Level 6
Autumn teaching
This module introduces the operating principles of various vehicle propulsion systems and their integration into a range of automotive applications.
Topics include:
- electric vehicle propulsion – motors, batteries, charging, battery management systems
- fuel cell systems – balance of plant, analysis of operating performance
- internal combustion – pperating processes and analysis of performance including efficiency, power output, fuel consumption and emissions
- low emissions – systems to reduce emissions and improve efficiencies including after-treatment systems, exhaust gas recirculation and turbocharging
- alternative carbon-free fuels including hydrogen and ammonia-based internal combustion engines
- hybrid powertrains – combinations of power sources, design of hybrid architectures, energy management strategies.
